Discover Lights in Your Life (Part 5, Potential Lights)

Research has proven loneliness and isolation lead to a shorter life span, supporting the importance of cultivating friendships and building support systems. You should know who will always have your back, be there in time of need, encourage you when you are down, or let you know when you are off track. These people are Lights in your life. In addition, there are activities and objects that may be your Lights.

Your Feelings List along with your Mind Types List, Body Types List, and Spirit Types List will lead to discovering the Lights in your life. To learn about creating these lists, refer to the earlier entries in this series:

  1. The criteria to determine Lights in your life (Feelings List)
  2. The types of Lights needed in your life (Mind Types ListBody Types List, and Spirit Types List)
  3. A list of people, activities, and things from which your Lights will be drawn (Potential Lights List, described below)

A person, activity, or object is one of your Lights if they invoke the feelings most important to you. Part 1 of this Discover Lights in Your Life series described how to create your Feelings List. Lights are supportive, but not because they expect anything in return. They are not rainy day friends. We attract that which we need to learn, so we often surround ourselves with people who share certain qualities or engage in activities we need for our evolution. Although we may learn much from them, these may or may not be our Lights. Even though someone or something may be part of our support system, they may not be a Light. Don’t confuse who or what is in your life with who or what is a Light in your life.

Creating the Potential Lights List

Gather your Mind, Body, and Spirit Types Lists. If you have not created these yet, refer to prior posts for instructions on how to create the lists by using the links shown above. Remember, the Types Lists should only contain one to three types each. Types are broad categories. Potential Lights are specific people, activities, and things.

Example (types are general, potential lights are specific):

Type ——–Potential Lights

Teacher —–Mr. Jones, Mrs. Haver, Jennie

Hobbies—–bass fishing, needlepoint, watercolor painting

Family ——Aunt Jane, Sally, Mom

Start with the first type on your Mind Types List. List all the people, activities, and things that give or support that type. Be specific. When you have exhausted all the potential people, activities, or things for that type, repeat the process for the next type. Do this for every Mind, Body, and Spirit Type.

When you created your Mind, Body, and Spirit Types Lists, you may have included types you desire in your life, but do not yet have. You may not have anyone or anything to list for these types. These are your Missing Lights, which will be addressed in a future journal entry. Knowing where you are missing Lights in important areas of your life allows you to fill the gaps, contributing to a more fully realized life.

Example: Building the Potential Lights List for Mind Types

Be spontaneous and list anyone or anything that has the potential to be a Light for each type on your lists. This is a brainstorming session, so no idea should be discarded. Stay open-minded and be specific.

Here are the steps to creating a Potential Lights List using an example Mind Types List.

Mind Types List: Collaborators, Hobbies, Partner

Step 1.    Start with the first type on the Mind Type List:

Collaborators

Step 2.    List people, activities, or objects with whom you currently collaborate. Be specific:

Sam, Dr. Jacobs, Melissa, Jess, Kelly

These are the Potential Lights for Collaborators.

Step 1. Pick the next type on your Mind Types List:

Hobbies

Step 2. List people, activities, or objects that are hobbies. Again, be specific:

Oil painting, knitting, cross stitch, gardening, cooking

These are Potential Lights for Hobbies.

Step 1. Pick the next type on your Mind Types List:

Partner

Step 2. List people, activities, or objects that are partners. Again, be specific:

Jason, Sally

These are The Potential Lights for Partner.

When the Potential Lights for Mind Types is complete, repeat steps 1 and 2 for each type in the Body and Spirit Types Lists. The resulting list of people, activities, and things is your Potential Lights List. This is one way to organize your Potential Lights List:

Example Potential Lights List

Mind Types Potential Lights
Collaborators Sam, Dr. Jacobs, Melissa, Jess, Kelly
Hobbies Oil painting, knitting, cross stitch, gardening, cooking
Partner Jason, Sally
Body Types Potential Lights
Doctor Dr. Smith, Dr. Sands
Exercise Jogging, Weight Lifting, Yoga
Spirit Types Potential Lights
Writing Keeping a dream journal
Music Listening to jazz, jamming with Jake on guitar

In the next journal entry, I will address using all the lists (Feelings List, Mind Types, Body Types, Spirit Types, and Potential Lights) to reveal your Lights.
